An Unwanted Guest

The Blurb:

A mountain lodge hotel in the Catskills is cut off from the world by an ice storm.

When one guest dies, it seems like a tragic accident. But then the body-count begins to rise. There is a murderer amongst them and they are trapped with no contact with the outside world until the storm passes.

An attorney, a writer, two couples and two female friends stay in the beautiful three story hotel with the hotel owner and his barman son. As the storm descends and the bodies start to appear the tension rises and the paranoia sets in. Everyone suspects everyone and with a lack of anything else to do, they all get pissed every night.

First things first, this is not a scary book. If you are looking to be so terrified that you have to put the book in the freezer as per Joey from friends, then move along this is not your book.

Think more Agatha Christie murder mystery than Stephen King sweat inducing  terror.

That said, this is an excellent book. It’s pacy and fun with interesting characters and you will be so eager to reach the end you will read it in a day or two.

This is an atmospheric thriller, perfect for a rainy day beside the fire.

Truth Or Dare?

Truth Or Dare 2018 Starring Lucy Hale

Olivia and her friends are partying in Mexico when they meet a mysterious stranger who brings them to a creepy basement to play a game of truth or dare.

As you do.

It all starts out innocently enough, someone streaks, girls make out, the usual. But things go horribly wrong when the host tells them that the game is real and they’re all in. The rules are simple, you do the dare, or you die You tell the truth, or you die. If you refuse – you guessed it – you die. What follows is a race against time as the friends try and escape the game before they all end up six feet under.

This was a fun movie. It’s in no way scary (the snapchat filter style faces are definitely creepy though), think more Final Destination than Ouija. Although Truth or Dare is a somewhat formulaic horror/thriller, I enjoyed the ending which is something I haven’t been able to say about a lot of slasher/horror/thrillers in recent years. The production is slick and high quality but it definitely suffers for lack of jump scares, or any kind of scare really.

The cast are strong overall, but Lucy Hale definitely proves she can branch out after PLL and I could definitely see her as a scream queen if this is the road she is heading down. The deaths are nothing we haven’t seen before and they really missed a chance to get creative and improve what sadly is a mediocre teen scream. Still, it’s a good midweek or rainy day movie to pass the time and I did enjoy it, if you do decide to give it a go I would love to know what you think!

In The Air

It’s the best time of the year. It’s getting cooler, darker and more beautiful every day. Autumn is prime horror season. There’s nothing better than closing the curtains to the rain and watching a horror movie or reading a horror novel by the light of a roaring fire and some candles. That’s not even touching on the best season of the year – Halloween.

This week I am-

Reading: The Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena,

Watching: Truth or Dare with Lucy Hale and Little Evil with Adam Scott and

Re-watching: Tucker And Dale Vs Evil, because it’s the best.

I’ll have reviews to follow. It’s offically horror season, are you ready?
